Our client came to us wanting to solve space problems in their home. Their home had been added onto 2x but was not laid out or planned well for a modern family. Both sides of the family live out of town and come to visit often, and it was time to create space for guests and entertaining their families that didn’t involve a sleeper sofa and a cramped kitchen that didn’t even have a full sized dishwasher. The old floor plan made no sense. Walls remained that served no purpose, a bathroom was placed in a location that made no sense, there wasn’t a guest room or office that our clients needed bc he works from home, and the kitchen was in desperate need of a renovation. Our solution was to re-work their existing layout and expand their new living space 10 feet into their backyard.
This space would become an open concept kitchen, living and dining space with custom cabinetry, a large island to accommodate their family, updated appliances and ample storage space. Maggie has a large collection of china and pottery, so we built a custom china cabinet for her and it’s our favorite part of the space. The former living room was at the front of the house when you walked right into the front door. Bc we moved the living room to the expanded room in the back, we enclosed the former living room and converted the space into a large bedroom/office combo allowing the family to have guests and a work from home space. We also took some of the space and made a formal entry with storage and hanging space. The sight lines dramatically improved in this home. They got an extra bedroom, an updated bath (not pictured), a huge bright custom kitchen perfect for entertaining guests and a living space open to their beautiful backyard. We worked with what they had which minimized the size of the addition.
